Historical Background of Noerenberg Memorial Gardens

Noerenberg Memorial Gardens boasts a captivating history that intertwines with the legacy of Frederick Noerenberg, the visionary behind the gardens. Dating back to the late 19th century, the estate named Wilkommen was established by Frederick Noerenberg, the founder of Grain Belt Brewery, in 1890. This scenic estate, positioned along the shores of Lake Minnetonka, encompassed a remarkable Queen Anne-style home, tiered rose beds, and a gentlemen’s farm.

Following Frederick’s passing, the estate continued its legacy under the care of his daughter, Lora Noerenberg Hoppe, who lovingly maintained it until her passing in 1972. In accordance with her wishes, the house was respectfully demolished, and the sprawling garden and farmland were generously dedicated to the public.

In a monumental act of generosity, the Noerenberg estate spanning 73 acres was bequeathed to the Three Rivers Park District. This act of preservation ensured the continuation of the formal, English-style garden that Frederick and Lora Noerenberg had cultivated with devotion. The garden, adorned with an impressive array of annuals, perennials, trees, and shrubs, stands today as a cherished testament to the rich history of the Lake Minnetonka area.

Maintaining many of its original landscape features, Noerenberg Memorial Gardens stands as more than just a collection of plants; it’s a living heritage, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the serene beauty and storied past of this cherished landmark. Click for more.
