Brake Fluid

Is It Time To Replace Your Brake Fluid?

The brakes in your vehicle are a hydraulic based system. Any hydraulic system is dependant on a hydraulic fluid. In this case, brake fluid. It’s engineered to specific standards that maximize the performance and lifespan of your brakes and brake components. Over time, due to normal humidity, small amounts of moisture enter the braking system & brake lines. Most brake fluid is designed to absorb this moisture so that it can’t build up and freeze or boil. This absorption, over time, lowers the boiling point of the brake fluid. If brake fluid boils, the resulting vapor in the system can cause catastrophic system failure putting your life at risk.

Brake Fluid’s natural safeguard against moisture buildup is also why it is recommended to be flushed, or changed, between every 1-2 years depending on the fluid type. Newer vehicles have 2 fluid level marks visible under the hood. The high and low mark are there to offer a quick indication of the brake condition and remaining life. Do not mistake a “low” indication for the need to “top off” the fluid as this can cause a pretty messy situation the next time you get your brakes done. Instead, if you see the fluid at the “low” mark, come to Certified Auto Repair for a brake system inspection.
